Babalwa Fatyi

Babalwa Fatyi is a distinguished environmental leader, poet and multidisciplinary creative whose work uniquely bridges science, sustainability, and human storytelling. As the founder and Executive Director of Myezo Environmental Management Services (Pty) Ltd since 2005, she has built an internationally respected career in environmental governance, sustainability strategy, and impact assessment. An internationally registered auditor, she holds a Master of Science (Cum Laude) from the University of the Witwatersrand, where she was honoured with the South African Association for the Advancement of Science Award for the most outstanding MSc degree in the Faculty of Science across all South African universities in her graduating year.

Her academic journey is further complemented by a BA in Arts from the Global School of Theology (USA), shaping a leadership philosophy grounded in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. Deeply inspired by global frameworks such as the United Nations Environment Programme and its Making Peace with Nature blueprint, Babalwa’s work addresses critical global challenges including climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, while promoting sustainable development across sectors.

With extensive experience spanning private, public, and non-profit environments, she has become a trusted advisor in sustainability—supporting organisations in building impactful environmental strategies, reducing carbon footprints, and implementing effective risk mitigation and reporting frameworks. She has shared her expertise across numerous national and international scientific platforms, published in academic journals, and opened at the International Association of Impact Assessment conference in 2018, addressing a global audience of nearly 900 delegates from 93 countries.

Beyond her scientific and leadership achievements, Babalwa is deeply committed to human development and mentorship. Her leadership extends to governance and civic engagement, including her role as Vice Chairperson of Ladies of All Nations International (South Africa) and her membership with the Institute of Directors South Africa. Alongside her distinguished scientific career, Babalwa Fatyi is a writer and creative collaborator on the Holding Onto Humanity project, where her work introduces a deeply human and emotional dimension to visual storytelling. Through her poetry, she translates imagery into feeling—capturing the unspoken narratives, cultural nuances, and human connections within each photograph.

Her writing is rooted in a profound sensitivity to people, identity, and heritage. With an intuitive ability to observe and interpret emotion, she crafts poetic pieces that echo the stories behind the lens—giving voice to moments that might otherwise remain silent. Her work is both reflective and evocative, seamlessly bridging the gap between visual art and human experience.

Within Holding Onto Humanity, Babalwa plays an essential role in shaping the project’s narrative. Each poem is thoughtfully created to accompany specific images, enhancing their meaning and inviting audiences to engage on a deeper, more personal level. Her words do not simply describe what is seen—they expand it, offering perspective, context, and emotional resonance.

Her contribution transforms the project into a multi-dimensional experience, where photography and poetry exist in harmony—preserving stories, honouring cultures, and celebrating the shared threads of humanity. Through her voice, the project becomes not only something to view, but something to feel, reflect on, and carry forward.
